Over the weekend V4 Clothing attended A Skate at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, New York. A Skate is a non profit organization that provides skateboarding clinics for children with autism. It allows them to feel comfortable in a friendly and social environment while learning how to skateboard. "We provide one on one skate lessons for persons with autism in an environment that is appropriate to their sensory needs in order to learn". A Skate helps promote awareness and educates the important benefits that skateboarding has to offer.
A Skate welcomes any body from the ages of 3 years old up to adults. Families can attend the clinics at no cost and can also apply to the "Grants for Gear" program. This program helps fund skateboarding gear to applicants of all ages. Clinics are held throughout the country at numerous skateparks. All safety equipment and gear is provided at the locations. A Skate has a volunteer based staff and is open to anybody who is interested in supporting the cause. "Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors". 1 out of 68 children have autism and over 3 million individuals are affected by it in the US.
How Skateboarding can Benefit Children with Autism
Skateboarding can be extremely beneficial for people who have autism. "Studies show that vigorous or strenuous exercise is associated with decreases in stereotypic (self-stimulatory) behaviors, hyperactivity, aggression, self-injury, and destructiveness". Skateboarding can help boost confidence, relieve stress, anxiety, and improve memory. The A Skate clinic allows these children to feel more comfortable and socially accepted.
